Meet on ragging a damp squib
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, NOV. 16. The `interactive meeting' between students,
parents and faculty members of the Gandhi Medical College,
organised here on Friday by the college management in the wake of
ragging incidents, turned out to be a damp squib with low turnout
of students and parents.
The meeting was held at the initiative of the East Zone police as
part of `counseling method' to root out the evil in educational
institutions. The effort is made in the wake registration of
cases against five senior students of the GMC under the Anti-
Ragging Act by the Narayanaguda police a month ago.
A few weeks ago, the DCP East, Mr. C.V. Anand, addressed a
meeting of the GMC students on the college premises and appealed
to them to desist from ragging juniors. Recently, the
Narayanaguda police discussed the issue with the college
management and it was decided to conduct a meeting with students,
parents and faculty members to tackle the problem.
However, for strange reasons, the turnout was very low and not
many parents showed interest in attending the meeting. Even the
number of parents of senior students was also negligible. Minutes
before the meeting began, Mr. Sikander Hayat, vice-principal,
GMC, ordered mediapersons to ``leave the place as you do not have
the permission of the college principal to enter the premises''.
When the scribes and lensmen protested and pointed that they had
come on the invitation of the police, they were told to wait
outside for a possible ``briefing'' later. Police officials
expressed dissatisfaction over the ``non-cooperative'' attitude
of the college management to check the menace.
