'Conviction more important than big budget'
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, NOV. 18. A filmmaker's conviction in his subject was
more important in making a good film than investing huge amounts
on it, said Mr. Shyamal Karmakar, director of the film `Ranu'
which is participating in the 12th International Children's Film
Festival.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Karmakar felt
big budgets don't necessarily ensure a film to be a good one.
"One needs to have confidence and conviction in the subject
chosen for a film. Such efforts are more appreciated than films
made with more money and less conviction," he said.
Mr. Karmakar described his film `Ranu' made with a limited budget
as one made with complete conviction. The film deals with the
story of a 13-year-old poor girl coming from a rural background.
The director who took a cast that comprised mostly newcomers said
he was comfortable working with children. "Also, I selected new
faces because even child artistes have become stars and are
charging heavily. My low budget doesn't permit that kind of fee,"
Mr.Karmakar said.
