Terrorism to be big problem in coming years: BJP
By Our Staff Reporter
KOZHIKODE, NOV. 18. The BJP national vice-president, Mr. V. Rama
Rao, said here today that the terrorist attacks in different
parts of the world had finally made the international community
think that terrorism would the biggest problem of the civilised
world in the coming years.
Inaugurating a two-day BJP State committee meeting at Tirur in
Malappuram district, he said that the stand adopted by India on
terrorism and related issues has further gained momentum in
international circles and the `possibility of its acceptance'.
The success of the tour of the Prime Minister, Mr. A. B.
Vajpayee, in three countries revealed that the decisions of the
party were in the right direction. All the three nations
including Russia, America and Britain had expressed their
willingness to cooperate with India for combating terrorism, he
added.
He also pointed out that the BJP within a short span of time in
power had brought the issue of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir to
the United Nations Assembly. Whereas, being in power for 50
years, the Congress party could do precious little to put an end
to the grave problem, he alleged.
Mr. Rama Rao also said that the Congress along with the
Opposition parties was accusing the ruling party of attempting to
create communal division in the country. All these parties have
started a propaganda war to malign the NDA Government in the name
of the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO).
`POTO has been envisaged to deal with terrorist organisations
and fundamentalist activities. It is not against the Muslim
community,' he stressed.
He noted that there were similar laws related to the POTO now
being implemented in various States.
Presiding over the meeting, the BJP State president, Mr. C. K.
Padmanabhan, said that the opposition of the Chief Minister, Mr.
A. K. Antony, to implementing POTO would drastically affect the
law and order situation of the State. `His decision is against
the interests of the State,' he said.
He alleged that the State was a beehive of terrorists
activities. The non-implementation of the Ordinance would lead to
dire consequences, he cautioned.
`Terrorists organisations have stepped up activities in various
parts of the State. But the UDF Government is showing a lenient
attitude towards them. This will aggravate communal tensions in
future,' he said.
He alleged that Mr. Antony and his Government had failed in all
spheres of activity. Depreciation was seen in the agriculture and
industrial sectors. The policing and educational sectors were
also hit due to irrational policies, he added.
The BJP general secretaries, Mr. P. P. Mukundan, Mr. P. K.
Krishnadas, and Mr. P. C. Mohanan Master, the former presidents,
Mr. K. Raman Pillai and Mr. K. V. Sreedharan Master and the
Malappuram district president, Mr. C. Vasudevan Master, also
spoke on the occasion.
Later a huge anti-terrorist rally was taken out in the town. A
public meeting was also held.
The BJP State Committee meeting will conclude tomorrow.
