Week devoted to little bundles of joy

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, NOV. 18. Yes, there is a week all devoted to your little bundle of joy. The National Newborn Week celebrations end on November 21 with a series of events organised by the National Neonatology Forum (NNF).

The Forum was established in 1981 as an organisation committed to improving the health status of newborn babies across the country, according to Dr. N.Karthik Nagesh, President of the Karnataka Chapter and Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Manipal Hospital. The NNF along with World Health Organisation (WHO) began celebrating the Newborn Week last year to focus attention on the health of newborn babies and to care for the sick ones.

Across Bangalore and other cities, activities during the week will aim at training medical students, doctors, nurses, and paramedics on various aspects of neo-natal care and preventive medicine. The emphasis will be on promoting safe deliveries by ensuring that each one takes place in the hands of trained persons. The focus will be on teaching the correct procedures to be adopted and on the guidelines set for the care of babies at birth and their early days to prevent asphyxia and infections, which are major ``killers'' of infants. Stress will be placed on giving proper care to babies with low birth weight and premature ones, according to Dr. Nagesh.

Each major hospital in Bangalore is organising activities in this connection.
