BJP MLAs seek early completion of Krishna Water Project

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, NOV. 19. The BJP MLAs' here on Monday demanded early completion of the Krishna Water Project to supply drinking water to the twin cities as the water supply position was deteriorating fast.

Talking to presspersons, Dr. K. Lakshman, deputy floor leader of the party, and Mr. M. Dharma Rao, MLA, said that the Government was delaying the project despite the crisis faced by 60 lakh people.

Contrary to earlier claims of the Government, the diversion through Madhava Reddy canal of 90 MGD of water in two phases at a cost of Rs.800 crore was also not being undertaken despite the willingness of agencies like the HUDCO to fund it.

The reservoirs built in the city and the neighbouring municipalities to accommodate the Krishna waters were lying in neglect and if and when the project was completed, those might become useless, they said.

At present, only 145 mgd of water was being supplied on alternate days to the residents while the need was 230 mgd. The Chief Minister had assured on the floor of the House that by plugging leakages and completing the pipeline work of Singur project, 14 mgd would be supplied by November. In reality, it was not being done, they said.

Referring to the proposed protest of teachers of aided schools and colleges, they demanded release of funds to give them salaries. The teaching staff was not being given salaries for the last three months.

They said the DA installment announced by the Chief Minister to the State Government employees must be given to the employees of corporations and the teaching staff of aided institutions.
