GMC students boycott classes

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV. 20. Students of the Gandhi Medical College (GMC) boycotted classes on Tuesday, protesting against reports in newspapers over ragging in the college and the police, who were said to have arrested a student late last evening, in connection with an incident of ragging.

After the agitation, several students left the campus. The lull that followed was broken with the entry of some members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), led by its city secretary, Mr. Raju.

Noisy scenes were witnessed when GMC students tore posters with slogans against ragging that were stuck by ABVP members. Some calm was restored after the Narayanaguda police entered the scene and allowed ABVP members to stick the seemingly `harmless' posters.

However, trouble broke out again when GMC students tore the posters. ABVP members argued with the police saying that they were only pasting posters with anti-ragging slogans and they were not offending anyone's feelings.

They entered into an argument with a student of the college, when he asked them to leave the campus saying that they were in no way connected with an issue that involved the college and its students. The ABVP, the college students said, did not have any presence in the college and as such they had no locus standi. The police sought to bring peace over the two groups. ABVP members were waiting to meet the Principal of the GMC, Dr. Meenakshi, but she was not present.
