Milosevic charged with genocide

THE HAGUE: The United Nations War Crimes Tribunal on Friday said it has charged Mr. Slobodan Milosevic with genocide in Bosnia in its third and gravest indictment against the former Yugoslav leader. The court confirmed that the new indictment, drawn up by the chief prosecutor, Ms Carla del Ponte, to cover alleged atrocities by Serb forces against Croats and Muslims during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, contained enough evidence to go to trial. Mr. Milosevic, extradited from Belgrade on June 28, already has been charged for alleged war crimes in Kosovo and Croatia. The Bosnia indictment was the first to include genocide, the most serious crime in the tribunal's statute. Thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats were killed and thousands more imprisoned in more than 50 detention facilities under inhumane conditions, the indictment said. Many more were forcibly transferred from their homes.
