CPI(M) opposes move to privatise water supply

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, NOV. 23. The 16th Maha Sabha of Hyderabad City Committee of the CPI(M), which concluded here on Friday, has denounced the Government move to set up water regulatory authority and privatise water distribution system and decided to mobilise the public opinion for an agitation.

In a resolution adopted at the meeting, the party said the regulatory authority and privatisation would result in abnormal increase in water charges.

Mr. P.S.N.Murthy, city secretary of the party, said the metropolitan water and sewerage board was sought to be privatised at the best of the World Bank. The hike in water rates would deprive the areas inhabited by the poorer sections of the water facility which they were enjoying hitherto. The Maha Sabha called upon the people to be prepared for an agitation.
