Meet to evolve code of conduct for legislators

NEW DELHI, NOV. 24. There is a wide response to the All-India Conference of Presiding Officers, Chief Ministers, Parliamentary Affairs Ministers, Leaders and Whips of Parties on ``Discipline and Decorum in Parliament and State Legislatures'' being held here tomorrow. Fifty-nine Presiding Officers, 16 Chief Ministers, 28 Ministers of Parliamentary Affairs, 159 Leaders and Whips of various States would meet at the Central Hall of Parliament.

A total of 323 legislators representing various political parties have confirmed their participation at the conference, a release from the Speaker's office said today.

The conference has been convened by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G.M.C. Balayogi, and aimed at addressing the major contributory factors leading to disruptions and interruptions in Legislatures and taking some concrete decisions to bring about a change in the state of affairs in legislative bodies. It also seeks to evolve, for the first time, a code of conduct.

The conference will be inaugurated by the Vice- President, Mr. Krishan Kant, and will be addressed by the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee. The Leader of the Opposition, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, would initiate the debate while the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Mr. P.M. Sayeed, will move the resolution to be adopted.
