Rowing: Punjab foursome simply awesome
By Our Special Correspondent
CHANDIGARH, NOV. 24. Punjab and Chandigarh were able to defy the
domination of Services and Kerala, albeit in one event each, in
the National Games rowing competition at the picturesque Sukhna
Lake here on Saturday.
The Punjab foursome of Gurnam Singh, Jagtar Singh, Kulwinder
Singh and Jarmanjeet Singh clocked 6:55.96 in beating the
Services team by nearly 10 seconds in the men's coxless four pair
event.
Of course, Services asserted its supremacy in winning the other
three golds on offer in the men's section.
Similarly, the 17-year-old Gurpreet Kaur continued to assert her
potential by winning the women's scull event with a timing of
9:04.66, thirteen seconds ahead of the seasoned Jincymol Varghese
of Kerala.
Jincymol was perhaps tired after helping Kerala win the double
scull gold. She had lost the race in the heats also to Gurpreet,
the Asian Championship junior silver medallist.
