Pritish-Debashish duo wins title

KANPUR, NOV. 25. Pritish Kushari and Debashish Ray of Kolkatta pipped the leaders till the end of the penultimate round, J. M. Shah of Mumbai and K. V. Krishnamurthy of Hyderabad, to clinch the title and carry home the bonanza of Rs. 80,000 in the Sir Padampat Singhania Memorial Inter-Continent bridge tournament which concluded at the Kamla Club here on Sunday.

Kushari and Ray finished with 709 VPs. Shah and Krishnamurthy, who had staved off the challenge of 10 opponents could not do so in the last round and surrendered the lead to the ultimate winners. Shah and Krishnamurthy had to be content with the second prize of Rs. 60,000.

Such were the tumultuous results that many gained ground in the closing stages to close in on the top positions. Kolkata's pairs, Kamal Mukherjee and Vinash Todi (695 VPs) and seasoned campaigners, Sudhir Ganguly and Alok Sadhu (660 VPs) were third and fourth and took home Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 20,000 respectively.

Other positions in the top ten: 5. Mrs. Kiran Nadar & B. Satyanarayana, Delhi 648 VPs; 6. S. Bhattacharya & S. Roy, Railways 634; 7. Subhash Gupta (Delhi) & K. R. Venkataraman (Chennai) 634; 8. Sushil Agrawal & Indresh Agrawal, Allahabad 623; 9. Manas Mukherjee & Rana Roy, Railways 621; 10. B. N. Rastogi & A. K. Sinha, Lucknow 621.

The prizes were distributed by Mrs. Sushila Singhania, wife of the sponsor, Dr. Gaur Hari Singhani, and the prize distribution function was presided over by Mr. P. C. Goenka, President Emeritus, Bridge Federation of Asia & Middle East and Bridge Federation of India.
