Emergency in Nepal

KATHMANDU, NOV. 26. Nepal's King Gyanendra imposed a state of emergency on the Himalayan nation today after the worst violence in five years by Maoist guerrillas fighting to topple the monarchy.

The Government had asked King Gyanendra, to proclaim the emergency after rebels attacked police and Army posts across the country over the weekend. ``His majesty, the king, has in accordance with the Constitution of Nepal declared a state of emergency in respect of the whole of the kingdom of Nepal,'' a palace statement read out on state television said. More than 100 people have died over the past three days in Maoist guerrilla- sponsored violence.
