Invitation for official function leaves out Mayor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 26. Representatives of local bodies have been given the short shrift at a function organised by the Government in the city on Tuesday to distribute title deeds to 5,000 families in the district.

The Revenue Minister, Mr. K.M. Mani, is scheduled to inaugurate the distribution of title deeds, with the Cooperation Minister, Mr. M.V. Raghavan, presiding over the function at the SMV School. The panel of speakers include Mr. V.S. Sivakumar, MP, the MLAs, Mr. B. Vijayakumar, Mr. K. Mohankumar and Mr. M.A. Vahid, and the District Collector, Mr. K.R. Jyothilal.

LDF leaders allege that the exclusion of the Mayor and the District Panchayat president constitute a violation of conventional practice and political propriety. The Mayor, Ms. J. Chandra, said she had not been invited for the function. Expressing her disapproval, she said it was odd that local self- government institutions were not being represented.

Strangely, an official pressnote quoting the Collector today issued a formal request to the general public and representatives of local bodies to participate and make the function a success.
