Steps to ensure power for all

PONDICHERRY, NOV. 26. The Union Power Ministry has taken several measures to ensure the success of the Mission-2012 aimed at supplying power for all, Mr. Shachindra Sharma, Deputy Secretary, Union Power Ministry, has said.

The Mission-2012 envisaged complete electrification of all households, and the Ministry was adopting an integrated approach, he said addressing a meeting of industrialists at Mettupalayam near here.

He said one lakh mw of additional power was required.

The Energy Conservation Bill envisaged efficient utilisation of power. It provided for stringent penalties against those who indulged in power theft, and energy audit was made mandatory.

Inaugurating an awareness programme on Mission-2012, Mr. A. Muthunarayanan, Superintending Engineer, Electricity Department, said the transmission and distribution loss in Pondicherry was 12.9 per cent, which was far less than the national average. The Union Territory bagged the Central award for the lowest loss in transmission. The per capita power consumption was higher than the national average.

He said that under the one hut one bulb scheme, 30,000 people were given power supply.

Mr. K. Parthasarathy, president, Association of Small Industries of Union Territory of Pondicherry, suggested that the administration extend financial support to industries for optimum utilisation of power. This would help to bring down power loss.
