PSUs in the doldrums
Sir, - Your Editorial `State Governments in business' (Nov. 17)
should be an eye-opener to all the States. That only one-fifth of
the State-run public sector enterprises all over the country have
been commercially viable is a sad commentary on their management
and efficiency.
Unfortunately, too much political interference in their
functioning has caused much harm and put them in the doldrums. It
is time the working of these units is re-appraised. The States
should either rehabilitate or privatise perpetually sick
enterprises. If the performance of the State Electricity Boards
and transport corporations is any indication, the situation
warrants corrective measures on a war-footing to make them
profitable.
