87 and going strong

Sir, - In his felicitation to Justice Krishna Iyer, ``Eighty- seven and still batting,'' (Nov. 16) Mr. Fali S. Nariman has perceptively observed that ``he advises no one but public causes, he holds no brief but for his country. Whenever he speaks on matters of moment, India listens.'' There can be no better summation of Justice Iyer's stupendous contribution to Indian jurisprudence. I have, like many others, been the fortunate recipient of his sagacious counsel in trying times, and this he has unstintingly given despite his crippling ailments. How ardently one wishes that members of the Bar and Bench would emulate his example and cease being mere legal mechanics.

Sir, - The article on Justice Krishna Iyer brought out his contributions to the law, humane understanding of legal problems and social philosophy and other rich attributes - particularly his contributions to the understanding of the Anglo-Saxon system of Jurisprudence, which ``did work if only we knew how to make it work''.

Regarding environmental issues, many professionals would recall his views that people in India have to be sensitised to the proper understanding of environmental jurisprudence. This was stressed in his address to the national seminar on ``Environmental Compliance and Enforcement'' at the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board at Chennai on June 25, 2001.
