Veteran S. African leader dead

CAPE TOWN, NOV. 27. Mr. Joe Modise, the veteran leader of South Africa's liberation movement and defence minister in the

country's first democratically elected government led by Mr. Nelson Mandela, died on Monday night. He was 72.

He did not contest in the second democratic elections of June 1999 due to ill health. However, he remained a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress, its highest policy-making body.
