Children told to improve their skills

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV. 27. The Home Minister, Mr. T. Devender Goud, has called upon schoolchildren to utilise science and technology not only for improving their lives, but also for overcoming problems caused, among others, by pollution.

Inaugurating the three-day Ranga Reddy District-level Science Fair at HCL DAV High School, Mallapur (Nacharam), on Tuesday, he advised students to be well informed and acquire knowledge.

``You are living in a competitive environment. If you don't upgrade your skills, to match the standard of knowledge society, you would be left behind,'' the Minister told students from 133 schools, who put up over 400 exhibits at the fair. The theme for this year's fair was `Science and technology for society'.

Mr. Goud pointed out that such fairs provided opportunities for students to display their talents and abilities. He spoke of the priority being accorded by the Government to primary education and also to the goal of achieving total literacy by the year 2005. He was confident that science and technology would play a leading role in achieving the goal.

Mr. K.K. Gupta, Chief General Manager, Hindustan Cables Ltd., observed that science fairs would go a long way in creating scientific temper among students. Mr. G. Ramchander Goud, Chairman, Kapra Municipality, and Mr. Ajay Jain, Ranga Reddy Collector, who presided, underlined the importance of motivating children to tap the latent talent in them.

Earlier, Dr. V. Sukumar Reddy, Ranga Reddy District Education Officer, in his welcome address, said participants in the fair had mostly utilised waste material for preparing models put up for display.

Mrs. T. Prameela, secretary, District-level Science Fair Committee, proposed a vote of thanks.
