Services, Kerala dominate

CHANDIGARH, NOV. 27. Services and Kerala made it to all the five finals in canoeing and kayaking in the 1000-metre men's races in the National Games at the Sukhna Lake here on Tuesday.

Punjab did well to make the finals in all the three kayak events K-1, K-2 and K-4 apart from C-2 in canoeing.

The other qualifiers for the final in kayaking were, Chandigarh and Karnataka in K-1; Andhra Pradesh in K-2 and K-4 and Manipur in K-2.

In canoeing, Andaman and Nicobar, apart from Karnataka, joined Services and Kerala in the finals in both C-1 and C-2, while Manipur did well to join the others in C-1.

With five lanes in operation, it was easy for the organisers to complete 11 races.

The Chandigarh lad Ravi Antil returned a timing of 4:12.81 in winning the K-1 event, and should give a good fight to P.K. Baroi of the Services who clocked 4:12.00 in winning his race.

Vaga Ram of Services looked too strong as he won the C-1 event with a timing of 4:45.71 nearly two seconds ahead of V.K. Vinu of Kerala.

The 500-metre heats will be held on Wednesday, after the finals of the 1000-metre events.
