Revolutionary software for digital photo printing
By Vijaykumar Patil
BELGAUM, DEC. 2. Just as modern technology and computers have revolutionised photography and led to the construction of high-tech cameras, from conventional to digital, there been a change in photo-printing. The new software "FotoReplica" has come as a boon to professionals, especially those setting up professional digital photo studios, thanks to the "software minds" at the "Deltra Software," a Belgaum city-based unit engaged in software package development.
Being professional and having carved a niche in the field of digital imaging in the country, the units "Fotolab" software was bundled with Hewlett-Packard's inject printers and computers in 2000-2001. The latest version now provides a complete solution to starting a professional digital photo studio.
FotoReplica, is essentially a result of two years of research and analysis by a dedicated team of professionals in the fields of photography, digital imaging, and software engineering at Deltra under the leadership of Mr.Ravindra Deshpande. Talking to THE HINDU, he highlighted the salient features of the "user-friendly" software available at Rs. 3,500.
The application of digital technology and computers was not possible until recently because of the low quality of digital cameras and deskjet printers in India. But the low-cost megapixel digital cameras and photo-quality deskjet printers have now made it possible to have a complete digital photo studio which eliminates chemical processing, and has wide-ranging advantages over conventional printing technologies. That it is also "environment friendly" is obvious.
Selection of appropriate software is the key to success in any process of computerisation. The customer wants a true-to- life, natural photograph. Thus, specialised software is required in the photo studio environment. This has been conceptualised in the form of FotoReplica (FR).
FR is specifically designed for digital photography, and has an attractive colourful interface, which is easy to operate. Anybody with basic knowledge of photography and familiar with computers can learn to use the software within hours.
Though there are several features, what makes FR unique is the introduction of index printing, custom-size templates for multiple copies, and an on-the-fly compose which leaves the original file intact and unsullied. Photographs downloaded from a digital camera can be directly selected and printed in any size instantly in multiple copies. The photo is automatically re-sized for printing, eliminating the fear of distortion.
The software is also empowered with image editing and enhancement features such as brightness, contrast, colour correction, conversion to black and white as well as sepia tone. The "photo correction" provides 10 variations enabling easier and faster comparison and selection similar to "test print" in conventional photography, while black and white conversion gives Mr. Ravindra says that with such features that convert a computer system into a complete photo-processing laboratory, it is obvious that FR has added quality to photo artwork. Some have the expertise to convert old black and white photographs into colourful compositions of the highest quality.
