Time to close ranks

Sir, - The Madras High Court has spoken. The judgment is along expected lines for the people whose own massive verdict now stands vindicated. Though Ms. Jayalalithaa is entitled to celebrate, it would be advisable for her to hasten slowly in the matter of reascension.
It will be to her credit if she waits till she completes the formality of getting elected to the State Assembly, before staking her claim again.
As for Mr. Karunanidhi, this is an opportune moment to display a measure of statesmanship. He is too shrewd a politician not to realise that the drubbing his party got at the hustings was largely due to the perception that the court cases were a bit overdone. His stock would, therefore, go up in the minds of the people if he let Ms. Jayalalithaa get elected unopposed.
And the people of Tamil Nadu would be spared further acrimony and, perhaps, it may even open up the path of reconciliation that is the need of the hour.
Is it too much to expect the two leaders to rise to the occasion and bury the hatchet?
R. Narayanan,
Baroda
Sir, - The acquittal has vindicated Ms. Jayalalithaa, who was a loner in her crusade against vendetta. She has two options now: Take over as Chief Minister immediately or contest an election and prove her support.
The second option is more congenial to the values of democracy, but she has to erase the public impression that she is a back-seat driver and Mr. O. Paneerselvam is only a puppet on her strings.
