`Credible' secularism

Sir, - Mr. Dipankar Gupta has analysed the credibility of `secularism' vividly in his article, ``For an intolerant secularism'' (Dec. 3). The `secular' parties and their leaders need to introspect. The very term is a misnomer, as far as our country is concerned. Only with an unbiased mind, one can become truly `secular.' Self-proclaimed `secularists' have the penchant for decrying `Hindutva' and `Hinduism.' Denigrating the `majority' community seems to be their way of understanding `secularism.'

No one grudges the political parties for resorting to `minorityism' for the sake of votes, but they should desist from insinuating and humiliating other religions. H.P. Murali, Bangalore
