Resurrecting corrupt?

Sir, - The High Court verdict exonerating Ms. Jayalalithaa will be challenged in the Supreme Court and amid legal loopholes, the question of corruption will be further debated. But the ruling has thrown open certain issues that need a wider debate at a time when the review of the Constitution is under way.

The code of conduct is not legally enforceable, as is clear from the verdict. The framers of the Constitution are to be blamed for not making the directive principles enforceable, and this has triggered a chain reaction, culminating in the judgment.

Loopholes in law should not be allowed to resurrect the corrupt in public life. Unless effective laws are framed to make the code of conduct legally acceptable and the Constitution amended to enforce the directive principles, there is no way to stall corrupt politicians from being resurrected. N. Nandhivarman, Pondicherry
