CPI(M) opposes military ties with U.S.
By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 5. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today opposed the Vajpayee Government for committing itself to enter into a strategic military relationship with the U.S. and urged it to ``desist from this harmful course''.

In a statement here, the CPI(M) politburo said the decisions arrived at the Indo-U.S. joint defence policy group meeting constituted a major step towards forging a military alliance. ``In doing so, the Vajpayee Government has agreed to a whole range of collaboration at the military-level.

This includes joint exercises, training programmes and acceptance of the U.S. plans to counter nuclear proliferation.''

The joint statement showed that the Government has gone along with the American plan for a National Missile Defence system.
