Sikhs resent J&K Govt. refusal to release report
By Our Correspondent

JAMMU, DEC. 5. The Jammu and Kashmir Government's refusal to make public and implement the Ansari Commission report which probed the anti-Sikh riots in Jammu of January 13, 1989, has caused resentment among the Sikhs. The commission, headed by Mr. Justice Ansari, retired High Court judge, submitted the report nearly a decade ago.

Talking to The Hindu the senior Sikh community leader and State president of the Akali Dal (B), Mr. Harginder Singh, said that more than a decade after the crime took place the people responsible were yet to be brought to justice. The State Government's refusal to release the report shielded the culprits.

On January 13, 1989 a procession on the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh was attacked. Fifteen Sikhs were killed and their property damaged. Several Sikhs were injured. There were also reports of large-scale looting and destruction of property. The Army had to be called to restore peace.
