NEW DELHI, DEC. 5. Mahesh Bhupathi defeated Suwandi Suwandi of Indonesia 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 to move into the pre-quarterfinals of the $25,000 Challenger in Bangkok. He will meet Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands in the second round.

Leander Paes lost to qualifier LIor Dahan of Israel 2- 6, 6-4, 2-6 in the first round. National champion Mustafa Ghouse lost in the second qualifying round 1-6, 3-6 to Andrei Merinov of Russia, after a bye in the first round.

In doubles first round, Leander and Mustafa lost to the top-seeded Denis Golovanov of Russia and Vadim Kutsenko of Uzbekistan 3-6, 6-4, 4-6.

Mahesh and Vittaya Samrej of Indonesia lost 2-6, 4-6 to qualifiers Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea and Frank Moser of Germany in another first round encounter.
