Nilavoli in sole lead
By Manuel Aaron

CHENNAI, DEC. 5. H. Nilavoli moved into the lead with four points from four games at the end of the fourth round of the Kumaraguru College of Technology 16th National Junior girls chess championship on Wednesday. And world under-12 silver medallist, Dronavalli Harika, is in second place, half-a-point behind.

Nilavoli beat the reigning National under-18 champion J.E. Kavitha, also of Tamil Nadu, from the black side of a Sicilian Paulsen Defence. Kavitha made the theoretical sacrifice of the e4 pawn on the 10th move in return for a bind of the black queen-side. But the black pieces squirmed out of the bind while the queen deftly defended her weak king-side. The weak black bishop finally exchanged itself for the well placed white knight and slowly the extra pawn on d5 made its presence felt. Black's d-pawn slowly advanced down the board with clever threats and forced white's resignation on the move-44.

On the second board, Harika accounted for one of the third round leaders, Mary Ann Gomes of Goodricke National Academy. Mary got an inferior position with her Birds Opening, but eventually equalised and even had a slightly better position. When they reached the first time control on move-40, Mary had slightly better chances in the rook and minor pieces ending. But amazingly on move-42, she failed to notice the threat to her rook and pushed her pawn. When her rook was snapped off, she resigned.

National under-14 champion Eesha Karavade defeated past champion C.V. Rajalakshmi in an interesting middle-game. Rajalakshmi had played the Kings Indian Attack in a strange manner without any bite to it.

Y. Prathiba and the Maharashtra champion, Madhuri Patil, played a very long game only to share the point at the end.

Points position: 1. H. Nilavoli 4; 2. D. Harika 3.5; 3-13. J.E. Kavitha, Y. Prathiba, Madhuri Patil, Eesha Karavade, R. Mahima, P. Priya, P. Malarselvi, Manasi Dadarkar, Baisakhi Das, Amruta Mokal, Mary Ann Gomes 3; 14-16. P. Sivasankari, Pooja Rathod, C.V. Rajalakshmi 2.5.
