Lifetime achievement award for Umrigar

MUMBAI, DEC. 5. Polly Umrigar will be the second recipient of the Castrol Lifetime Achievement in Cricket award, in the form of a glittering trophy and Rs 5 lakhs cheque at a function in Bangalore on December 17, 2001.

The first Indian to cross the 3000-run mark in Test cricket and also score a double hundred in Tests, the Mumbai- based all-rounders distinguished career started in 1948 and culminated in 1962.

Umrigar scored 3631 runs, 12 hundreds and averaged 42.22, marking his mark as an attacking batsman, brilliant fielder and effective off-break bowler.

Even after retiring from the game, he continued to be involved with Indian cricket as selector, team manager and executive secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
