EDO vacancy filled up for tiger reserve
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, DEC. 5. The post of Eco-Development Officer in the Kalakkadu-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) in Tirunelveli district, which remained vacant for nearly four months, has been filled up.
The post was hitherto held by Mr. Sugato Dutt, who was granted leave. Thereafter no one was posted in his place. Mr. A. O. Lime Toshi, District Forest Officer, Salem, has now been posted.
One of the important areas in the Western Ghats, the KMTR is a tiger habitat and the World Bank is funding a project for protection and conservation of the endangered big cat.
From November onwards, elephants from the Kerala side move into this part of the Western Ghats. At present, the authorities have sighted in the reserve area, a few herds which migrated from Kerala.
A couple of weeks ago, poachers from Kerala entered the sanctuary in an attempt to kill tuskers. But their attempt was foiled and luckily no pachyderm was killed, forest sources say.
If the wild elephants in the KMTR need additional protection, the `Makhna' (a tuskless male elephant and rare specimen) in the Theppakkadu Training Camp in Mudumalai, Nilgiris, created problems for the Wildlife Warden, who has now been shifted to Hosur. Recently a lawyer filed a petition in the High Court alleging that the authorities were beating the pachyderm and little care was provided to the animal.
Mr. U. Ravindran, who was with the TANTEA, has been appointed District Forest Officer, Salem, on return from leave.
Mr. T. P. Raghunath, a Deputy Conservator rank officer from the Arasu Rubber Corporation, Nagercoil, has been posted as Lecturer in the Southern Forest Rangers College, Coimbatore, in the place of Mr K.Palanisamy, who has been appointed Divisional Forest Officer in the Social Forestry division, Vellore.
Mr. K. S. Krishnan, at present Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry, Vellore, has been deputed to the ARC. Mr. K. N. Sre Ganesh, Working Plan Officer, Coimbatore, takes over as the District Forest Officer, Nilgiris South, exchanging places with Mr. K. Somasundaram.
