DMK, Left stick to bandh plan, TMC yet to decide
By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 5. While the DMK and the Left parties have announced that they would go ahead with the December 7 bandh plan despite the partial rollback of hike in prices of essential services and commodities, the TMC would take a decision after studying implications of the concessions announced by the Government.

The DMK president, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, told reporters here today that his party and allies would not give up the bandh plan as the partial rollback only an `eyewash' and `temporary reduction'' in view of the decision of the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalithaa, to contest the Andipatti by- election, he told reporters.

In a joint statement today, the CPI State secretary, Mr. R. Nallakannu, and the CPI(M) State secretary, Mr. N. Sankariah, called for a total withdrawal of the hike, describing the partial rollback as an `eyewash'.

However, the TMC MP, Mr. Peter Alphonse, said the party would study implications of the concessions and consult the CPI and the CPI(M).

The TNCC president, Mr. E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said the bandh was an expression of the people's protest against the situation brought about by the price hike. It was not being organised for the benefit of any political party.
