Scribe carried gadget for subversive acts: Karnataka
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, DEC. 5. The `Nakkeeran' reporter, Mr. Sivasubramaniam, was arrested in forest areas for carrying electronic equipment meant for subversive purposes, the Karnataka DGP has informed the Tamil Nadu Government.
In his reply to the Tamil Nadu Government letter seeking details of the arrest, the DGP has said Mr. Sivasubramaniam did not give his correct identity when the Special Task Force, searching for forest brigand, Veerappan, questioned him.
His identity was established only with his driving licence, the DGP said, according to the Home Secretary, Mr. Naresh Gupta.
(Mr. Sivasubramaniam was the scribe who gained access to Veerappan. He accompanied his editor, Mr. Nakheerangopal, to the forests on several occasions to interview the brigand.)
Mr. Gupta told the media here that, investigations were continuing and no further details on the arrest of Mr. Sivasubramaniam could be disclosed now.
Asked whether Mr. Gopal would also be arrested as part of the hunt for Veerappan, Mr. Gupta said he could not reveal the Government's stand.
As for the Friday's Opposition-sponsored bandh protesting price hikes, Mr. Gupta said the Government did not anticipate any violence. All educational institutions would function as usual, normal train and bus services would be maintained and there would be no disruption of life during the 12-hour protest.
On the security arrangements for the Babri masjid demolition anniversary tomorrow, he said all police stations had been put on vigil and precautionary measures taken.
The police allowed the Tamil Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam to organise demonstrations in restricted areas to protest the demolition.
