MADURAI, DEC. 5. Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the southern districts of Madurai, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar, in view of the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary on December 6.

According to police sources, security has been stepped up in bus stands, movie halls and railway stations. Armed policemen have been posted at vital establishments, including TNEB sub-stations, bridges and places of religious worship.

At the Madurai railway station, the Government Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force personnel frisked the baggage of passengers. Bomb detection experts and sniffer dogs were also pressed into service.

The cloak room was closed as a precautionary measure. Parcels were also not being booked. Special announcements were being made advising passengers not to meddle with unclaimed baggage, according to railway sources.

At the Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple, the devotees were thoroughly checked and made to pass through bomb detection frames. Night patrolling and vehicle checks were also enhanced in the three districts. The security measures would continue on December 7 in view of the proposed bandh, police said.
