Munna murder accused smuggled spirit for ex-MLA: CBI
By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, DEC. 5. The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr. Ashok Menon, was informed by the CBI that the seizure of a tanker lorry carrying 6,625 litres of spirit smuggled in by P. Vijayan, on a tip off given by the murdered M.G. Munna, was "an added cause of enmity" towards Munna.

In a report filed before the Magistrate seeking to extend the remand of Vijayan, Mr. N. Surendran, Inspector, CBI, Kochi, said that the accused Vijayan had been engaged in smuggling spirit from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Munna also began the smuggling business and had plans to expand his business. The accused was, therefore, afraid of facing tough competition from Munna.

The CBI told the court that the lorry carrying the illegal spirit was seized by the Excise authorities near the M.E.S. College, Mannarkard, while the lorry was on its way to Perinthalmanna. The spirit was being smuggled by the accused for his own use and his elder brother, Mr. P. Kumaran, former Mannarkad MLA and CPI leader, and his brother's son, Mr. Sudhi.

(The Ernakulam Sessions court had earlier dismissed anticipatory bail petition filed by Mr. Kumaran and Vijayan's another brother, Mr. P. Narayanan.)

During the custodial interrogation, Vijayan had revealed that he was involved in the murder of Munna and the accused did not pay Munna Rs. 50,000 as promised by him. The CBI had earlier submitted that Munna had bid liquor shops run by Vijayan who promised Munna Rs. 50,000 for desisting from offering any bid during 1991-92. The business rivalry between the two had led to the murder of Munna. The charred body of Munna was found in a partially burnt abandoned car at Thuvasserykunnu near Srikrishnapuram in Palakkad.

Seeking further remand of the accused, the CBI Inspector said that the investigation had revealed that there was serious allegations against the accused. And the local people were afraid of speaking against him due to his might and influence.

The accused had given indications about the co-accused persons who were his business partners in the commission of crime and the destruction of evidence. The co-accused were yet to be arrested and the case was to be investigated further.

Besides, it was absolutely necessary to recover wrist watches and leather slippers worn by Munna and also the room keys of K.P.M. Tourist Home, Perinthalmanna, which was in the possession of Munna. There were incriminating evidence linking the accused to the murder case. If the accused were released, it would be difficult to unearth further evidence from Palakkad, Perinthalmanna, Thrissur and other places.

The court remanded Vijayan to the CBI custody till December 19.
