Students interested in 'French Connection'
CHENNAI STUDENTS do not fetter away any opportunity to study abroad. A recent career fair at the Alliance Francaise, explaining career opportunities in France, once again brought to the fore the interest here.
Organised by Agence EduFrance, the fair was a runaway success as students thronged to learn about the entries available in various disciplines. The organisers promoted the Grandes Ecoles, a specialisation institute in France. It was referred to as ``IIT or IIM of France'' and offered programmes in engineering, commerce, civil services and teaching.
Degrees from French Universities are recognised across the globe, the students were informed. Tuition fee was also competitive compared to other foreign universities.
The organisers also conducted some quick French lessons, which was taken well by the visitors.

The plenary session of `Women and Science' expo conducted by the bio-chemistry department of the Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science College concluded on a lively note. Students questioned health experts on issues ranging from women's health to effect of medicine on people. A poster competition was also organised.

Chaperones _ 2001, the biochemistry association of the Mohammed Sathak College of Arts and Science was inaugurated recently. Dr. S. Ramakrishnan, head of department of biochemistry, Sankara Netralaya Vision Research Foundation, was the chief guest.

An inter-collegiate State-level seminar on ``Social responsibility of business _ the changing scenario'' has been organised by the Kumararani Meena Muthiah College on December 6 on the college premises. Participants from 10 colleges in the state are expected to participate.

ZOUGOULOUGOUBAMBA! What? Yes. You heard it right the first time. If Zou... sounds Greek and Latin to you, well, it is probably a French expression. For that's what the French cultural festival of the Jaya College of Arts and Science held last week, was called.

Various colleges in the city celebrated World AIDS Day. Most of them did so, ahead of the actual day. The Alpha Arts and Science College organised a seminar on AIDS during its inter college competition `Microquest 2001' organised by the Illumina club of the Microbiology department, on November 22.
Dr. Sunithi Solomon, Director of YRG CARE inaugurated the event.

Jaya Engineering College had a busy week. First, students were taught Zen Buddhist meditation and yogasanas and a permanent yoga centre was created for students to practice.
The college also started a series of faculty development programmes early this month. The programme will prepare the faculty for better levels of teaching, the Principal Prof. C. Kumar says.

Students of MOP Vaishnav College for Women on Wednesday got all set for the NSS camp on `Women and Youth Empowerment' at the Pudupakkam village. The ten day camp was inaugurated by Ms. Sulochana Arumugam, panchayat president.
The volunteers will motivate self-help groups in the village, initiate training programmes in simple chemicals and processed food, organise tree planting, develop school gardens and put up street-plays for creating AIDS awareness.
The college will organise a ten-day literacy programme for primary school teachers and a medical camp in association with the Lions Club of Sakthi.

The other women's Vaishnav College, SDNB Vaishnav College for Women, Chromepet, organised a Miss Vaishnav contest. No, it wasn't the usual beauty contest. For the contestants had to go through a preliminary `Ethnic Round', `Talent Round', `Situation Round' for a semifinal and a final `Question Round'.
Nithya Iyer of III B.Com Evening College was crowned Miss Vaishnav after she said she would identify with ``the three identities of a woman _ that of daughter, wife and mother''. Srimathi of II Computer Science and Omkari of III Economics were declared the first and second runners-up to the title respectively.

Velammal College of Management and Computer Studies conducted contact programmes and examinations for 600 MBA students doing their programme through correspondence with the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Pune recently.
The Velammal Engineering College held a Parents-Teachers get-together on Saturday.

The Urban Horticultural Development Centre of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) inaugurated a training programme on horticultural technologies. The first session on `Value Addition of Fruits and Vegetables' was inaugurated by Dr. S. Kannaiyan, Vice-Chancellor. Others who participated include Mr. Surjit K. Choudhary, Commissioner of Horticulture and Plantation Crops and Dr. D. Malathi, Professor of Food Science, TNAU.

Tamil medium students of the Guru Nanak College were put through a two-week bridge course in English organised by the English department of the college recently. The students were taught grammar and skills of effective communication after class hours.
