SC order on car seat belts

NEW DELHI, DEC. 6. The Supreme Court today made fastening of seat belts mandatory for front seat occupants in cars and directed the Chief Secretaries of the States and Union Territories to implement the same.

A three-judge Bench comprising Mr. Justice B.N. Kirpal, Mr. Justice V.N. Khare, and Mr. Justice Ashok Bhan passed this order after noticing that Delhi alone accounted for nearly 150 deaths due to road accidents every month.

The Additional Solicitor General, Mr. Mukul Rohatagi, informed the court that the Centre had already initiated the process and intended to make the fastening of seat belts for the rear seat passengers mandatory from October 2002. - PTI
