Bangalore police solve 4 sensational murders
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, DEC. 6. Peenya police on Thursday claimed to have solved four gruesome murders, including three that hit the headlines recently, with the arrest of three youths. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. H.T.Sangliana, told presspersons here that the ``Sherlock Holmes of Bangalore'', the Peenya Police Inspector, Mr. Abdul Azeem, had cracked the three murders that had taken place in his jurisdiction and one in Sooladevanahalli Police Station limits by arresting Muniraju, alias Muniya (22) of Chokkasandra, Nataraj, alias Nata (23) of T.Dasarahalli and Ramamurthy, alias Rama alias Upendra (26) of Ramapura.
The ``bankrupt'' Ramamurthy's diabolic plans to make some quick money and Muniraju's lust for women had led to the four brutal murders.
The twin murder of Lakshmi Devi and her six-year-old son, Gautham, the killing of Mahadevan (79), and the kidnap, rape, and murder of eight-year-old Deepika, all in Peenya Police Station limits, have been solved. Also the mystery behind the murder of Krishna Reddy in Sooladevanahalli in June, 2000 has been unraveled with the arrest of three youths.
The description of Muniraju given by Deepika's younger sister, a vital information provided by Lakshmi Devi's neighbour, and Mr. Azeem's investigative skills led the police to the accused, who were arrested from Siddeshwara Temple at Siddarabetta in Tumkur District.
Police said that on November 21, Muniraju saw Deepika and her younger sister, Pooja (6), answering the call of nature near their school. He gave Re. one to Pooja and told her to go and buy chocolates. He then asked Deepika to accompany him to a nearby college to deliver a letter to his friend.
Muniraju took Deepika to a garbage pit and smothered her. As she fell unconscious, he sexually assaulted her, and strangulated her to death. Later, he covered her body in a rexin sheet and set it afire. The body was charred beyond recognition, police said.
Muniraju had put Deepika's silver anklets into the ``hundi'' of Ganesha Temple in Pampanagar in Peenya. The anklets have been recovered. Referring to the twin murder case, police said that Ramamurthy, who had set up a electrical shop, was in deep financial trouble and had instigated Muniraju and Nataraj, who were working in his shop, to select houses of some rich people, kill them, and loot the valuables.
Muniraju, who had earlier worked as cable television boy, went to Lakshmi Devi's house on November 23 with Nataraj and told the unsuspecting housewife that the television cables have to be repaired.
After working for sometime, the two smothered the woman and, as she fell unconscious, they raped her. Later, they slit her throat. Lakshmi Devi's son, who was playing on the terrace, came in as the two criminals were about to leave. Fearing that he would identify them, Muniraju and Nataraj hanged him from a ceiling fan with a sari. They made away with gold ornaments and documents, including LIC bonds, worth Rs. 50,000. The entire property has been recovered. Similarly, Muniraju and Nataraj went to Mahadevan's house in Chokkasandra on October 20 in the guise of cable TV boys and slit his throat. After murdering the aged man, they took away a television set, gold ornaments, and silver articles worth Rs. 35,000.
In June 2000, the two bludgeoned Krishna Reddy of Mallasandra to death at an eucalyptus grove at Chikkabanavara in Sooladevanahalloi Police Station limits. Reddy was hacked to death as he had married Muniraju's lover, Lakshmi, against her wishes, police said.
Mr. Sangliana gave away a cash award of Rs. one lakh to the team led by Mr. Azeem which solved the murders. The team comprised sub-inspectors, Mr. Arun N.Gowda, and Mr. Husseni Beig, ASI, Mr. Dhananjaya, head constables, Mr. Narayanaswamy, Mr. Erajunjappa, Mr. Muniraju, Mr. N.Rangachar, Mr. Rame Gowda, and constables, Mr. S.Nagaraj Gowda, Mr. C.R.Honnaiah, Mr. Veerabhadraiah, Mr. C.H.Ramaiah, Mr. Lakkanna, Mr. Channanarasaiah, and Mr. Gopal.
