Row over textbooks
Sir, - This refers to Mr. Achin Vanaik's ``The Textbook Controversy'' (Dec. 5). Presentation of history to our young scholars must be a rigorously transparent and unprejudiced exercise. If Pakistan deletes the history of `Hindu India' from its academic syllabi, should we also, only for this reason, try to paint the Muslims in a bad light and delete everything that is not in accordance with Hindu traditions and religion? Can we overlook the 700 years of Muslim and 200 years of British rule in India with all their socio-religious, economic, and political reforms? If some information hurts the sentiments of a particular section of the society, should we destroy all historical monuments related to that?

Sir, - There has been a hue and cry over the Centre's decision to rewrite history textbooks in schools. Whether it is the history text book or the Constitution of India, the interests of true nationalists must be towards representing information correctly and making sure that the laws in place support the national cause and are in tune with times.
A panel of experts with no political connections can perform the task of updating the textbooks. This will ensure that the next generation of youth are guided not by ancient law and science but by continuously enhanced systems of record.
