Opinion - Letters to the Editor

United Front

Sir, - This is with reference to your Editorial ``Towards a United Front'' (Nov. 30). The Congress and the Samajwadi Party have to make up their minds on whether they mean business while stepping into the arena for the coming elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Elections after 1989 have shown an erosion in the Congress support base and there is no reason why the party leadership should be under any illusion that the whole process has been reversed.

The Congress should decide whether it wants to defeat the communal forces decisively or just win a token number of seats.

On the question of leadership, the Congress should take a realistic view and decide in favour of Mr. Mulayam Singh as it had done in the case of Ms. Jayalalithaa in the last Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In case it does not reach out an understanding with the SP, the People's Front or the BSP, it should devise its strategy in such a manner that secular votes are not split. Its ultimate goal should be to defeat the BJP.

Mr. Mulayam Singh should also refrain from treating the Congress in a disdainful fashion as he has been doing in the last couple of years.
