Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Islam at the crossroads

Sir, - This refers to the thought-provoking articles, `Islam at the crossroads' ( Nov. 27) and `Radical Salafism' (Dec. 1). It was Islam, not the aeroplanes that was hijacked for the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon. Islam - the religion of peace - is steadily being transformed into ``terrorislam'' thanks to some teachers and preachers of this noble faith.

Love, tolerance, universal brotherhood, compassion towards fellow human beings are the noble teachings of the Koran and the Prophet. Hatred, enmity, revenge and violence are against Islamic principles. The spurious spiritual leaders who propagate this kind of distorted Islam should not be allowed to succeed in their evil plans. Enlightened Muslims must join all right- thinking and peace-loving people to defeat the terrorists.

The big powers that have waged a war against terror should simultaneously address the root causes of terrorism, especially in West Asia. Solution of the political and socio- economic problems existing in the Islamic world and other developing countries would discourage the spread of this evil.

C. Masthan, Chennai
