UGC identifies 'islands of excellence'
CHANDIGARH, DEC. 6. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified five universities in the country as ``islands of excellence'' which would give a fresh impetus and dimension by focusing on emerging areas in education, according to the UGC Chairman, Prof. Hari Gautam.
``The UGC has selected five universities - JNU, Pune, Jadhavpur, Hyderabad and Madras - for the purpose and allotted to them different areas in teaching, research and starting of new courses,'' he said addressing the All-India Vice-Chancellors' Conference here.
``The idea is not just to create something new for the students but we also want these centres to attract students from abroad,'' Prof. Gautam said.
A sum of Rs. 10 crores has already been given to the Madras University to set up a new Herbal Sciences Institute. Likewise, other universities too would have special courses soon, he said.
The Vice-Chancellors of over 120 universities are attending the conference, organised by the Association of Indian Universities at the Punjab University campus here.
