Babri Masjid demolition anniversary 'peaceful'
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, DEC. 6. The Babri Masjid demolition anniversary passed off peacefully today with no major incidents.
Many Muslim organisations staged demonstrations in various parts of the State, urging the Union Government to return the land where the Masjid stood.
The Tamizhaga Muslim Aikya Jama, the Muslim Makkal Kazhagam, the Tamil Maanila Muslim League and the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam staged demonstrations in the city.
The All-India Milli Council described December 6 as a black day for all ``true citizens of India who believe in secularism and religious harmony.'' ``This is time for all of us to show our solidarity for secularism and religious tolerance,'' the general secretary, Mr. S. J. Inayathullah, said.
The Tamil Nadu State Indian Union Muslim League said that the issue should be approached with a sense of justice. The Supreme Court should decide on the dispute and everyone should accept the verdict.
The Director-General of Police, Mr. B. P. Nailwal, said that there was ``no incident worth speaking of''. But at Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district, there was a stone-throwing incident during a procession around noon. The police were investigating the case, he said.
An instance of hoisting a black flag in the place of a BJP flag was reported from Adiramapattinam last night. Protesting the mischief, a road roko was organised this morning. However, the demonstrators dispersed later, police sources said.
Our Salem Special Correspondent reports:
The general secretary of the Indian National League, Mr. M. Abdul Latheef, told presspersons in Salem today, that ``on the Ayodhya issue, we will abide by the Supreme Court verdict'' and it is the bounden duty of the Centre to make other sections fall in line. The issue must be left to the court, as any other move would harm social harmony.
Referring to the stand taken by the Viswa Hindu Parishad that since it was a `matter of faith', it could not be resolved through litigation, he said the VHP leaders must ponder over whether the demolition of the Babri Masjid, a symbol of faith for the minority community was within the framework of the law.
Mr. Latheef said if the verdict was in favour of the minority community, it would not ask the Government to rebuild the structure, but would want the land to be handed over to the Wakf Board in Uttar Pradesh, which would take care of the construction.
Earlier, he led a dharna in front of the Collectorate.
