Sonia may visit Madurai on January 5
By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 6. The TNCC president, Mr. E.V.K.S. Elangovan, today said that the Congress president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, was likely to address a public meeting in Madurai on January 5.

He told presspersons here that the meeting would mark the formal merger of the Tamizhaga Rajiv Congress led by Mr. Vazhapadi K. Ramamurthy, with the Congress.

Calling for people's support to Friday's bandh, the TNCC chief accused the Government and the police of intimidating party cadres and attempting to thwart the protest.

Asked if the bandh would mark a beginning of a new political polarisation in State politics, Mr. Elangovan said it was only to demonstrate the wrath and frustration of the people and had no political message.

Mr. Elangovan regretted that while the Government was ready to reduce the price of liquor, it refused to lower the price of milk. He welcomed the Madras High Court verdict on the TANSI land deal cases acquitting Ms. Jayalalithaa and others.
