Ramadoss for common candidate
By Our Special Correspondent
SALEM, DEC. 6. The PMK founder, Dr S.Ramadoss, today suggested a common candidate be fielded against the AIADMK general secretary, Ms Jayalalithaa, in the Andipatti Assembly by-election.
Addressing a press conference here, he said the nominee, could be a student, youth or a woman from any political party. Asked whether he had initiated any step, Dr.Ramadoss said he had just mooted the idea.
The PMK leader said the partial roll back of the price hike was an eyewash, done with an eye on the bye-election. The people apprehended that after the election, the Government would not hesitate to go for another round of price revision. Therefore, the PMK was going ahead with the bandh called for Friday and would also launch a three-stage agitation, involving the student and women's wings.
By opting to introduce cheap Indian Made Foreign Liquor, the Government conceded its failure to contain illicit arrack trade. Before coming out with such an announcement it should have taken the Assembly into confidence or convened an all-party meeting.
Though the PMK advocated total prohibition, the Government could, for the sake of farmers, start marketing ``toddy in packet through the cooperative set-up''. By this measure, the pest menace could be tackled, thousands of toddy tappers would earn their livelihood and farmers would also get income. Dr.Ramadoss concurred with the view that farmers owning 50 acres and above, could be brought under a power tariff regime. On PDS commodities, he said a complete list of those living below poverty line be prepared to identify the real beneficiaries. Moreover, the Government must endeavour to elevate all BPL people to the APL (above poverty level).
