MPs urge PM to help Rayalaseema farmers
By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, DEC. 6. Members of Parliament belonging to Rayalaseema on Thursday represented to the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B.Vajpayee, in New Delhi on the problems being faced by the farmers in the region, particularly the groundnut farmers of desert-prone Anantapur district.

The Anantapur MP, Mr. K.Srinivasulu, told The Hindu over phone from New Delhi that 11 MPs of the region had called on the Prime Minister and submitted a memorandum to him on the grim situation faced by farmers of the region. The MPs were led by the TDPP leader, Mr. K.Yerran Naidu. They also met the Union Ministers, Messrs Ajit Singh and Vijay Goel on the issue.

The MPs from Anantapur, Mr. Srinivasulu and Mr. B.K. Parthasarathi, urged the Prime Minister to relax the procurement norms of groundnut by NAFED through AP OILFED as the yields were just 20 to 40 per cent of the normal this year due to adverse weather conditions. They requested the Prime Minister to reduce the seed percentage to 60 per cent from the present 70 and refraction to 5 per cent from the current 2 per cent.

Further, they requested changes in the national agriculture insurance policy to suit the farmers of drought-prone areas where agriculture produce was always less. They urged the Prime Minister to help the farmers with a blanket package so that all farmers who suffered crop loss beyond 20 per cent are compensated.
