MCH Commissioner inspects road-widening works
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, DEC. 6. Officials of the A.P. Transco came in for criticism on Thursday for failing to keep pace with the road-widening programmes of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) and shift electricity poles in time.
Members of the High-Level Coordination Committee, led by the MCH Commissioner, Dr. P.K. Mohanty, went around parts of the Old City inspecting progress of road-widening programmes.
Near the Malakpet railway bridge, the officials inspected works at the High Luck Hotel on the Race Course Road Junction. The Commissioner was displeased at the non-shifting of poles by the Transco and said it had taken the MCH five years to put things in place for the junction's improvement. Now that the work was on, it was imperative that poles were shifted in time, he said.
Dr. Mohanty said the 80 feet road would be 120 feet wide after the widening was complete. Also part of the widening was the construction of two bridges just ahead of the Malakpet rail bridge. He asked officials of the Roads and Buildings Department to go ahead and prepare estimates.
Once the widening process was complete, the space next to the Malakpet Railway Station, which was being used by lorries, could be reclaimed and used as a parking lot for the station under the new Multi-modal Suburban Rail Transport System. Space would also be available for construction of a new building for the Malakpet Police Station, he said.
At Kali Kabar too he pointed out that poles had not been shifted and urged the Transco to act immediately. However, further down on the road, en route to the Madina Junction, he had a word of praise for the officials, when he found that some poles had been shifted ahead of schedule, as other works were going on.
The officials then proceeded to the Lal Darwaza on the road from Chatrinaka to Kandikal Gate and to the Nehru Statue. Dr. Mohanty said the widening on this stretch was vital in view of the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project. While 38 structures had been demolished, consent had been taken for 45 more. The total compensation for the stretch was Rs. 3 crores, of which Rs. 71 lakhs had been paid so far.
Senior officials who participated included the Hyderabad District Collector, Mr. Rajeshwar Tiwari, the Deputy Commissioner of Police-Traffic, Mr. M.V. Dinakar Prasad, the OSD-MCH, Mr. Omar Jaleel, the MCH Additional Commissioner (Traffic and Transportation), Mr. R. Ranadhir Reddy, the Chief Engineer-MCH, Mr. Om Prakash, the Chief City Planner-MCH, Mr. Satish Chandra, the Chief Engineer-Metro Zone, A.P. Transco, Mr. Srinivasa Rao and the Deputy General Manager-Telecom, Mr. Janardhan Rao.
