Law to enforce simple marriages under study: CM

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 6. The Government is looking into whether the Dowry Prohibition Act might be suitably amended to ensure that marriages are conducted inexpensively, the Chief Minister, Mr. A. K. Antony, informed the Assembly today.

In a written reply, he said the recommendation in this regard had been made by the State Women's Commission. The Government proposed to provide insurance cover for policemen and was studying the matter.

The Chief Minister stated that 704 incidents of harassment of persons belonging to the Backward Castes and 256 cases of harassment of SC/STs had occurred since his Government came to power.

One person had died in police custody during the last six months and one person had committed suicide after release from custody. A total of 1,587 vehicles seized in various cases were in the custody of the police.

RCC issue

Out of 25 persons on whom the drugs M4N and G4N were tested in the Regional Cancer Centre here, 16 did not have any symptoms of the disease when last tested, the Health Minister, Mr. P. Sankaran, said in a written reply.

Out of the rest, three had died, one had developed cancer elsewhere in the body, one was serious and undergoing treatment in a private hospital and another was undergoing palliative care, he said. The drugs M4N and G4N had been tested on animals before being tried on humans.

The Government had issued directions to private hospitals to give free treatment to those below the poverty line, the Health Minister, Mr. P. Sankaran, stated. All hospitals had been directed to destroy dangerous and infectious wastes in the incinerator.
