IIITM-K to be 'technological hub' for IT revolution
By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 6.The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) would be the technological hub for the Information Technology (IT) revolution in the State.

Addressing a press conference here today, the Chairman of the IIITM-K, Mr. K.P.P. Nambiar, said the institute, since its establishment nine months ago, has been actively involved in promoting the IT industry in the State and the country. The IIITM-K has now become the key nodal centre for next generation IT enabling technologies in fields such as health care and education.

The institute has set up the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Business Incubation (CEDBI) to provide necessary human resource development support for the IT industry. The CEDBI as a technology incubator helps establish new companies in emerging areas of IT, and for existing IT industry to modernise into new areas.

Mr. Nambiar said the IIITM-K has submitted to the State Government four major projects of long-term importance for the State's development. This include the `Pilot Telehealth and Medical Informatics Initiative', `IT facilitated Healthcare', `Education and Network Services for Lakshadweep', `Establishment of Regional Centre of Media Lab Asia' and `Educational Grid Project'.

The IIITM-K Chairman said it had requested Rs. 4 crores from this year's allocation of Rs. 65 crores for the country for establishing the regional sub-centre of Media Lab Asia in the city to promote the concepts of Digital Village and empower the rural population through IT and other technologies.

The `Educational Grid Project' aims at combining all higher education colleges and institutions across Kerala over the State-wide information and Knowledge network. It is aimed at making IT a natural part of education and thereby bring quality education to all students independent of their location.

Mr. Nambair said as a byproduct, the `Educational grid project' will generate education or training of courses from these institutions for the industry and others.

In the IT-facilitated health care, the IIITM-K will coordinate with Lakshadweep authorities and the Medical Complex of Thiruvanathapuram here to commence Telehealth services in some of the islands. It will also develop necessary support systems for improving the quality of education in schools. The Union Government's approval is awaited for the project, he said.

The Government has already allotted 10 acres of land for constructing a permanent building for the IIITM-K, now functioning from the premises of the Technopark at Kariyavattom. The Director, Dr. K R. Srivathsan, was also present.
