By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC. 6. The 10-day annual festival at the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple will be held from December 9 to 18.

In a statement here today, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) public relations officer, Mr. Mohan Perinad, said the preparatory rituals like `prasada shudhi', `bimbha shudhi' and `mula pooja' will be held at the Ayyappa Sannidhanam on December 7 and 8.

The Thantri, Mr. Kantaru Mohanaru, would hoist the holy flag, marking the beginning of the festival at an auspicious time between 9.06 a.m. and 10 a.m. on December 9.

The `neyyabhishekom' for the presiding deity would be restricted up to the `usha pooja' on the flag-hoisting day. It will be resumed after the flag hoisting. The `sreebhootha bali' will be performed in the afternoon.

`Mula pooja', `utsava bali' and `sreebhootha bali' would be the specialities of the festival from December 10 to 17. The `pallivetta' would be performed at Saramkuthi on December 17 night. The `arat' would be held at the specially prepared Arat Kadavu in the River Pampa before the Pampa Ganapathy Temple at 12 p.m. on December 18.

The Thantri and the Melsanthi, Mr. A.R. Raman Nampoothiri, would lead the `arat' rituals. The `arat' procession to the Sannidhanam will set off from the Pampa Ganapathy temple at 3 p.m. Devotees can offer `nirapara' and other offerings to the presiding deity during the procession.

The TDB authorities will receive the procession and the Thantri will bring down the flag when the procession reaches the temple precincts, marking the culmination of the festival.
