20 held for violence in Kannur: CM
By Our Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 6. Police have arrested 20 persons in connection with the violence in the Sivapuram area of Kannur district during the last two days, the Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, informed the Assembly today.
Opposing an adjournment motion in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said the police had fired three rounds in the air following violence involving RSS and National Development Front (NDF) activists in the area and that a strong police contingent led by the DIG, Kannur, was maintaining peace in the locality.
Mr. Antony said 10 houses belonging persons on the two sides had been destroyed in the violence. There was also destruction of crops. The latest bout of violence was the result of a dispute over removal of a poster. The police had rushed to the scene immediately on getting information about the incident and fired in the air to disperse the mob. Detailed search in the area also resulted in discovery of arms and materials meant for making explosives, he said.
The Chief Minister called upon all sections to cooperate with the Government to bring the situation under control and ensure that peace and amity prevailed in the area.
The Speaker denied leave for the motion in the light of the Chief Minister's statement.
Earlier, seeking leave for the motion, the CPI(M) member, Mr. P. Jayarajan, said the violence erupted even as policemen watched without taking any action. He said the RSS and NDF have been engaged in skirmishes in the area since September and the latest incident arose over removal of a poster relating to the anniversary of demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6. Violence escalated within a short period and even the homes of CPI(M) workers came under attack. The police, he alleged, had not taken steps to quell the violence.
