Security tightened in view of bandh

CHENNAI, DEC. 6. Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police in view of the bandh tomorrow, the City Police Commissioner, Mr. K. Muthukaruppan, said today.

Addressing mediapersons at the weekly press briefing, the Commissioner said, additional security would be given to supply of essentials such as milk, water and to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, he said.

The buses would be operated as usual and security would be extended to business establishments and banks. Persons forcing shopkeepers to close down, obstructing the movement of vehicles and indulging in violence would be dealt with severely, he warned.

Nearly 12,000 police personnel and ten companies of the Tamil Nadu Special Police would maintain law and order. Nearly 100 persons identified as trouble makers have been arrested.

A new system to book vehicles parked in `no parking areas' was introduced today. Mr. Muthukaruppan said, the traffic police would put a clamp on the vehicles parked in such zones and lock it. A warning sticker would be pasted and the violators could contact phone no: 98400-17626. A fine of Rs. 150 would be collected from the violators.

Three-persons involved in robbery cases in Washermanpet area were arrested when they refused pay after eating at a roadside tiffin stall recently. They were detained under the Goondas Act, the Commissioner said.

Pornographic magazines numbering 9,000 were seized and six persons including an owner of the printing press were arrested and remanded to judicial custody, he said.

Motorcycles stolen in and around Velacheri were recovered following the arrest of seven youths.

Gold and silver jewellery, wrist watches were recovered following the arrest of a 22-year-old youth, he added.
